Due to the spread of the coronavirus and the threat it represents worldwide, sports competitions have stopped their activities, including the Copa Libertadores, which was in the group stage.

Conmebol allowed the matches to be played until Thursday, March 12, completing the second matchday. The initial measure to suspend the tournament affects the 16 matches between March 15 and 21, including the matches between Alianza Lima and Estudiantes de Mérida in Venezuela and Binacional against LDU Quito in Juliaca.

Given the subsequent measures to stop all competitions in the region, at least until March 30, the suspension of matches in the Copa Libertadores will be extended. In response to this, the president of Conmebol, Alejandro Domínguez, commented on the possible tentative date for the ball to start rolling in the Copa.

"(...) it could happen earlier, it all depends on how the situation evolves (with COVID-19), but today the tentative date is May 6," he mentioned in an interview with ESPN.

According to the schedule set at the beginning of the Copa, the group stage was supposed to end on May 7, so if the resumption takes place on the mentioned date by Domínguez, the completion of the Copa Libertadores group stage could be delayed for another month and a half.
