Sporting Cristal won 3-2 against Cusco FC in the 2nd round of the Torneo Apertura of Liga 1. However, the Celestial fans did not forgive coach Manuel Barreto for the 4-0 defeat against Barcelona from Ecuador in the Copa Libertadores.
The Sporting Cristal fans chanted against Barreto before, during, and after the match held at the Alberto Gallardo stadium. Not even in the team's goals was the 37-year-old coach saved from criticism.
About the insults received, Barreto commented in a press conference: "I can be surprised when I see an act of generosity or kindness. Unfortunately, fans' hatred doesn't surprise me, and neither does irrationality. I say it with sadness, but that's how it is. I am indifferent to what they do, I don't pay attention to whether it is disrespectful or not what they have done outside the stadium," he said.
Barreto took over as Sporting Cristal coach in September 2019, replacing the Argentine Claudio Vivas.
