A famous sports saying goes that defenses win championships. At Universitario de Deportes, they took note of this at the end of May when Nicolás Córdova left the team. The team has found balance (keeping a clean sheet in 7 out of the 12 games they have played) and has accustomed its players to winning, as they have the same number of victories (seven).
All of this changed the order of things. Today, Universitario de Deportes is the sole leader of the Torneo Clausura – at least until Sport Huancayo plays – and their fans are hopeful of repeating the title of 2013. And that is praiseworthy.
Despite the good victory against the champion of the Apertura, coach Ángel Comizzo remains humble. "We played better against Melgar (2-1 win). I will talk to the boys to see what happened in the first 15 minutes of the second half," said the coach.
Ángel Comizzo did not want to talk about the classic match against Alianza Lima that will be played in two weeks. "We don't think beyond the next Saturday, we will work thinking only about that," he said, making it clear that they consider the upcoming match in Huancayo as "a new final".
