The Irishman Dan Martin (Emirates) conquered the sixth stage of the Tour de France on Thursday by winning at the top of the Muro de Bretaña. The Belgian Greg Van Avermaet (BMC) retained the yellow jersey as the leader of the general classification after this stage, in which the Frenchman Romain Bardet and the Dutchman Tom Dumoulin, two podium contenders, lost time in the final climb. Bardet gave up about thirty seconds and Dumoulin lost 50 seconds to the race leaders.

The British rider Chris Froome struggled in the final climb, a 2 kilometer slope with an average gradient of 6.9%. Froome crossed the finish line 8 seconds behind Martin. The Irishman attacked with 1,200 meters to go and beat the Frenchman Pierre Latour by one second, and a small group led by the Spaniard Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) and the Frenchman Julian Alaphilippe (Quick-Step) by three seconds. Dan Martin, whose palmares include two monuments (Liège-Bastogne-Liège, Giro di Lombardia), achieved his second stage victory at the Tour. Last year, he finished sixth overall.

The main contenders to wear yellow in Paris managed to stay in the climb among the group led by Sagan at the finish line. The Slovakian rider beat the Italian Sonny Colbrelli, just like he did last Sunday in the arrival of the second stage in La Roche-sur-Yon. The Belgian Philippe Gilbert finished third ahead of the Spaniard Alejandro Valverde and the Frenchman Julian Alaphilippe, two riders with chances in Thursday's stage at Muro de Bretagne.
