The runner-up of the previous Copa Libertadores, Lanus, made its debut with a 4-2 victory in the Copa Sudamericana against Sporting Cristal, which conceded the fourth goal five minutes before the end with a header from substitute Di Renzo.
In the first leg, six goals were scored and there were moments of tactical disarray, with Lanus dominating but with a combative Sporting Cristal that found life in two local errors, giving them hope of achieving a surprise on March 7 in Lima.
Lanus, playing its first international match since losing the Libertadores final to Gremio, only needed a couple of well-connected plays to get its machinery running smoothly, gain confidence, and cook up an express goal that came in the 15th minute.
Not everything is lost for Sporting Cristal. Mario Salas' team still has a chance. And they will have to close it at the Estadio Nacional, with their fans.
