The Peruvian National Team qualified for the 1982 World Cup after playing only four matches. In their debut against Colombia in Bogota, they drew 1-1. Teofilo Cubillas played the full 90 minutes that day and missed a penalty. He later revealed that he did not have permission from his club, Fort Lauderdale Strikers of the United States, and missed the rest of the process.
Finally, in September 1981, the team secured first place and the ticket to the World Cup after drawing 0-0 against Uruguay in Lima (the groups only had three teams and the format was home and away).

Julio Cesar: Teofilo, I am very happy to be able to talk to you after obtaining the qualification. I hope that for Spain 82 you can rejoin the group and we can show our football in Spain.
Cubillas: I want you to congratulate all the guys for me.
