The elimination not only hurt Arequipa, but also Peru. Melgar had everything in their favor to continue advancing in the Copa Libertadores, but Santiago Wanderers ruined the party in their own home. And of course, Enrique Meza had no choice but to apologize and be harshly critical of his team.
"What can you say to the people? Simply, we fell short, especially in the first half, where we showed no attitude or desire and I saw a lot of fear. We wanted to make an impact in the Copa but we let them down. I think we lacked hierarchy and personality to play, that's how I can summarize it," said Meza in a press conference.
Blinded by the pain of elimination, Meza affirmed that Melgar had "high hopes" of advancing in the Copa Libertadores, after the 1-1 draw they achieved in their visit to the Chilean team.
“We used the same system on Saturday and things went very well. I think in the second half, the boys came out with a different attitude, but it wasn't enough," he added.
On the other hand, the coach of Melgar invited the fans to support the club for the match against Sport Boys, which will be played this Saturday at the Universidad Nacional San Agustín stadium.
