Sanctioning of Goalkeeper Mauricio Viana by FPF

The sanction of goalkeeper Mauricio Viana by the Commission of Justice of the Peruvian Football Federation [FPF] has set a precedent in Peruvian football. Let's remember that in the match between Sporting Cristal and Ayacucho FC last weekend, the Chilean attacked Jesús Arismendi and the referee only showed him a yellow card. However, this Tuesday, the CJ-FPF announced a one-match suspension for Viana.

What to Expect from Future Sanctions?

So, what can we expect from now on regarding the sanctioning of Mauricio Viana? The answer is simple: a club must wait for the match to end and, if the referee does not see or sanction a foul against their player, they must claim and demand that action be taken, just like they did with Sporting Cristal's goalkeeper after the match against Ayacucho FC.

Controversy on Off-Field Sanctions

This has generated a lot of criticism, especially from people who perceive football as a sport of the moment, where sanctions cannot be carried out outside the 90 minutes. Of course, we are referring to fouls that occur on the field. Undoubtedly, what happened with Mauricio Viana has set a precedent for what is to come.

The Statement

"Sporting Cristal goalkeeper Mauricio Viana has been sanctioned with a one-match suspension by the Commission of Justice of the Professional Football Sports Association (CJ-ADFP). The commission found Ayacucho FC's claim against the Referee's Report of the match between Sporting Cristal and Ayacucho FC, played on Sunday, July 2, 2017, in the seventh round of the Opening Tournament, to be well-founded. Ayacucho FC filed a complaint regarding 'Mauricio Viana's aggression against Jesús Arismendi, whom he punched in the abdomen'," reads the statement.
