Alberto Quintero has become the player of the moment in Universitario de Deportes. The Panamanian winger has scored 3 goals in his last two games as a starter and has gained the trust of Argentine coach Pedro Troglio. But fans wonder, why didn't Quintero have that continuity in the 'U'?
Luis Tejada, his compatriot and teammate on the 'crema' team, talked on Monday with the program 'Fútbol Como Cancha' from RPP Noticias and explained the reasons why Quintero didn't play for the 'U'.
"What happened is that he was getting filled with mistrust, I told him to stay calm, to prepare well. I know there was a reason, so between him and me we found it and it was that he wasn't physically well. He arrived with a lot on his plate, he didn't know if he was coming or staying in the United States, he traveled there to settle some issues. He came back and played from the start and in the Libertadores (Deportivo Capiatá), that takes its toll. He recovered from that in the games he wasn't called up, he prepared well and made it to the national team. When he came, you saw a different Quintero," said the 35-year-old forward.
The 'Pana' highlighted the work that Argentine coach Pedro Troglio has imposed since taking charge of Universitario. "The 'profe' has come and has implemented a different system for the players to press, run and it's giving results. We are taking advantage of the mistakes of the other teams and we are lucky to be winning."
Competition. The two '9's of Universitario are Hernán Rengifo and Luis Tejada, but for the new coaching staff, it's 'Charapa'. Tejada said he is supporting him and at the same time working for when his opportunity comes.
"As a professional, teammate and group, we have to support him. He is a great player, maybe the door will open for him to score. It's a healthy competition, it's a good group, now it's his turn, I keep preparing well alongside the group and for the day when my turn comes, do it with the same responsibility," he concluded.
