Know how many votes the former footballer got in the electoral process that ended with Santiago Peña's victory
Right-wing economist Santiago Peña emerged victorious in the Paraguay presidential elections with the Colorado Party, which will also control the parliament, reaffirming its hegemony in a country it has governed for over 70 years.
The campaign was marked by corruption allegations against main figures of the ruling party, Peña obtained 42% of the votes.
Opposition leader Efraín Alegre, leading a center-left coalition, obtained 27%. In third place was Paraguayan Cubas, a right-wing anti-system former legislator, with 22%. Voter turnout was 63%.
And how did José Luis Chilavert do? The 57-year-old former footballer, who ran for the Youth Force Party with Sofia Clara Scheid as vice-presidential candidate, received 24,284 (0.8%) votes out of the 3,022,946 people who went to the polls.
"Congratulations on the success of the Colorado Party, I hope you have an excellent government and don't forget about the humble people who go hungry in our country," said Chila to Santiago Peña, the new president of Paraguay.
