The former goalkeeper José Luis Chilavert and the president of Conmebol, Alejandro Domínguez, were summoned on June 16 by a court in Asunción in the criminal complaint for defamation, slander, and insult filed against the former by the executive of the main South American football entity.
The lawyer for Domínguez, Claudio Lovera, explained that the complaint is based on "expressions that Mr. Chilavert made through Twitter in September, October, November, and December of last year, where claims of facts and value judgments are made with respect to Mr. Domínguez."
He added that the former Paraguayan goalkeeper attributes to the head of Conmebol "situations in which there would be criminal convictions," so "the decision was made to present them before the realm of justice and debate them in an oral trial."
Chilavert, who resides in Buenos Aires, has accused Domínguez of corruption through his social media accounts and media outlets in Argentina and Paraguay.
Lovera stated that the attacks of the former goalkeeper are not limited to the current role that Domínguez has held since 2016, but from the time he was president of the Paraguayan Football Association (APF), between 2011 and 2014.
The legal advisor of the head of Conmebol said that the hearing will be "in-person, if any of the parties request it, other avenues could have been chosen, but for now we are satisfied because this type of event does not generate crowding."
"We will be present because according to the rules of the Paraguayan Code, complainants are obliged to attend unlike the accused, who is not obligated to do so and if they do not, it is understood that the process continues," Lovera said.
Chilavert celebrated this Wednesday in his social media account that he has been summoned, while referring to Conmebol as "Corrupbol".
"They finally opened the doors of Corrupbol to me, now the world of football will learn about the shady dealings of ADominguez and his entourage. It is the class struggle in Py, I am the Pyo people against political clans, which do so much harm to Py," he expressed on Twitter.
The next stage of the process is the oral and public trial, in which the reparation of damages is raised and the sentence is evaluated, which has an expectation of six months to three years in prison.
If the sentence is more than two years, the accused must go to prison, since the suspension of the execution of the sentence, provided for in local regulations and applied to individuals without criminal records, should not exceed two years, according to the lawyer.
