According to historical data, on May 6th, 1934, the forward Arsenio Pastor Erico put on the Independiente de Avellaneda shirt for the first time, a club that enjoyed his exceptional talent. The match ended in a 2-2 draw against Boca Juniors.
In this city shared with Racing, dressed in red, the Paraguayan considered the best player of all time became a legend and wrote his history in Argentine football with golden letters. To this day, he remains the all-time leading scorer with 295 goals in 325 matches.
Erico, whose career started in 1930 at his beloved club Nacional, joined Independiente after dazzling the 'Diablo' management in a friendly match. This match took place during a tour by the Red Cross national team to raise funds shortly before the Chaco War between Paraguay and Bolivia (1932-1935).
He could have stayed in the canyons of the Western Region, but destiny had another leading role for him far from the weapons. Called to tame the 'capricious' like no one else, Erico performed so well on the green pitch that even Argentina offered him their sacred shirt. However, he never wore the Albiceleste, nor the Albirroja.
Idol of the legendary Alfredo Di Stéfano, the former Argentine forward who became a legend at Real Madrid, once expressed his admiration for the Santarín Rojo. "He was a stylist, he was different. He jumped like crazy, he was a beast in headers, and he had a very good look. He did things that others didn't," he highlighted.
He passed away on July 23, 1977, in Buenos Aires, at the age of 62. The Libertadores de América stadium named a part of its stand after him as an eternal tribute to his great contribution. Currently, his remains rest at the Defensores del Chaco stadium.
