Paraguayan Darío Lezcano scores penalty as Juarez FC beats Queretaro
Paraguayan Darío Lezcano scored a penalty in the 84th minute to lead Juarez FC to a 3-1 victory over Queretaro in the second leg of the Mexican Cup round of 16 on Wednesday.
Juarez won the series 5-4 with Darío Lezcano and William Mendieta as starters. Víctor Gustavo Velázquez, the defender, was on the bench but did not play.
Chilean Ángelo Sagal, Uruguayan Martín Rabuñal, and Lezcano scored for Juarez, coached by Argentine Gabriel Caballero, while Colombian Fabián Castillo reduced the deficit for Queretaro.
Queretaro started the game attacking, having only a one-goal advantage in the series after a 3-2 win in the first leg. In the 5th minute, Marcel Ruiz headed the ball in the box, but his shot went straight to the goalkeeper. Later, Roberto Alderete had a dangerous shot, but it went over the crossbar.
Before the end of the first half, Chilean Sagal received a through pass, entered the area, and crossed his shot into the left post of goalkeeper Gerardo Ruiz to make it 1-0.
The second half started with action. In the 52nd minute, Uruguayan Martín Rabuñal scored the second goal that gave them the victory in the series, as he caught a rebound in the area and placed the ball into the right post of Ruiz's goal.
Queretaro reacted with Colombian Castillo, who received a pass in the area unmarked and slotted it between the goalkeeper's legs, making it 2-1.
As the match was losing intensity, with the series tied and the teams waiting for penalties, Paolo Yrizar knocked down Alderete in the area and the referee awarded a penalty. Lezcano struck the ball into the right post and secured Juarez's spot in the quarter-finals, where they will face Dorados de Sinaloa.
Monterrey will face Santos Laguna in the quarter-finals.
