The Mexican Football Federation continues its appeal process at the TAS for the fines imposed by FIFA, following the famous "ehh, puto" chant shouted by Mexican fans. It has been and continues to be a headache for the directors, who despite their campaigns have not been able to stop it, and their hope lies in the relevant organizations making it clear that it is a word without homophobic undertones.
Because of this situation, and at the request of the players themselves, it was considered to play the Final Hexagonal outside the Estadio Azteca. The idea continues, although the match against Costa Rica on March 23 will be played at the Coloso de Santa Úrsula.
Santiago Baños, sports director of the Tricolor, explained that "we are worried about the possibility of being affected. If the fines continue, the next step is a ban, and we would not want to reach that point".
He added that "we are going to play the one in March at the Azteca. We have time to decide about the ones in June. We want to play the entire qualifying stage at the Azteca, it is our home and we feel supported by our people, but we also have to consider that point, if we continue with the fines, we need to make a decision, I don't know if it would be convenient to move a match from the Azteca because of that".
From their position, Baños mentioned, they have tried to stop the situation. "There have been several" appeals, but they have achieved little. "We can't do anything, we have invited people to stop, unfortunately it hasn't worked. Guillermo Cantú is leading the efforts in this matter. Hopefully we can reach a good outcome".
Regarding the Confederations Cup and the Gold Cup, "we take two different teams to each tournament, well FIFA doesn't even allow you to take the same players, and if you add the league matches of their clubs, it could be too much workload".
