The Mexican boxer hopes to have Freddie Roach as his new trainer, after ending his relationship with Erik Morales
Mexican boxer Jaime Munguía is about to complete his first week of training with renowned trainer Freddie Roach in Hollywood, California, hoping to finalize him as his new trainer in the coming days, after ending his relationship with four-time world champion Erik 'Terrible' Morales.
Sources confirmed to ESPN Knockout that Zanfer Promotions is close to finalizing Jaime Munguía's return for the last quarter of the year. Although there has been speculation about a possible fight against undefeated Puerto Rican contender Edgar Berlanga, the name that is truly on the table is that of British boxer John Ryder, who went the distance against Canelo Álvarez in Mexico last May and has already been an interim champion in the Super Middleweight division.
Munguía, only 26 years old with a record of 42-0 and 33 knockouts, is coming off an important victory in his professional career, defeating Sergiy Derevyanchenko in one of the best fights of 2023. On that occasion, with Erik Morales in his corner, he took scores of 115-112, 114-113, and 114-113 to win the WBC Silver belt after a decisive knockdown in the twelfth round.
The reason for the split between Munguía and Morales, as revealed by Erik himself to ESPN Knockout, has been the lack of time, as a few months ago he was appointed as the director of the Sports Institute of Baja California, and his duties did not allow him to be with Jaime full-time.
Roach, a seven-time winner of the Trainer of the Year award, has already had contact with Munguía, but as opponents. On that occasion, in November 2021, Jaime defeated Gabriel Rosado in an exciting battle that ended by decision. Freddie has trained legends such as Manny Pacquiao, Miguel Cotto, Oscar De La Hoya, James Toney, Michael Moorer, and Mike Tyson, among others.
