The Mexican Baseball Team won the gold medal at the 2023 Central American and Caribbean Games due to the cancellation of the final game against Cuba. The match was not played due to heavy rain, which awarded the 'Tri' with the golden award. The decision is based on the regulation that states: "When a game is suspended due to bad weather conditions, it must wait an hour and a half to resume, otherwise it will be canceled and the win will be awarded to the best team".
The rain did not stop, so the conditions were not suitable for the referees to inspect the field. After over an hour of waiting, a meeting was held involving the commissioner and members of both teams.
Subsequently, the best way to determine the winner of the gold medal was decided. The rule states that it should be awarded to the team with the best record throughout the competition, which in this case was favorable to Mexico with a 6-1, while Cuba had a 4-2.
The decision was announced to the public after almost two hours of waiting. The Mexican fans celebrated the determination, while the Cubans protested as they expected the game to be played. As an additional note, there was no possibility of rescheduling the match for another day, as both teams already had return flights to their country.
It is worth mentioning that this distinction as the most precious metal in the King of Sports is the first in the history of Mexico in the discipline within the Central American and Caribbean Games. In addition, the patena in the diamond adds to the remaining 70 medals of the Mexican delegation, who now have a total of 185 medals.
