The Liga MX title obtained by America in the Clausura 2013 became the first one that Miguel Herrera as a coach achieved, which served him to begin positioning himself as a candidate for the Mexican National Team and remained in the memory of the Azulcrema fans.
But for the former coach of the Azulcrema, one of the moments that he values the most is when Christian 'Chucho' Benitez, the top scorer of that team, gave him his jersey as a sign of gratitude.
The Ecuadorian forward was the best center forward in the Liga MX by winning three consecutive scoring titles, so that night he closed his time in Mexico with the championship against La Maquina, as he later decided to emigrate to Qatar, the country where he unfortunately passed away two months later due to a congenital problem.
For Miguel Herrera, that celebration was special, as Benitez approached him and gave him the last jersey he wore as a player for Las Aguilas, which he keeps at home with great affection.
"At that moment he was very happy, because when the game ended, he approached me and said, 'This is for you; because you experienced the three championship titles, this title is for you.' He gave me his shirt and I have it hanging in my house and I keep it with great affection. An extraordinary player that I had the opportunity to coach and he showed me his love and his last moment in Mexican football with a lot of joy," Miguel Herrera recalled to ESPN.
For Herrera, Chucho Benitez's time at America represents difficult shoes to fill, just as Salvador Cabanas' era as the team's top scorer during the most challenging moments of the institution was.
"Chucho was very decisive, very important. Chucho left a difficult mark to fill, just like Cabañas did. Both decisive and resolute in what they did."
