America ran out of coach: Fernando Ortiz left the club after being eliminated.

It's official! Argentine coach Fernando Ortiz announced on Sunday his resignation as coach of América of Mexican football after his team was eliminated by Guadalajara's Chivas in the semifinals of the Clausura 2023 tournament. However, it was not until this Monday that the 'Águilas' management confirmed his departure from the institution.

“It's too short for what I came, I just have to say that for me and my coaching staff today I close a cycle with the institution, that's it, thank you very much,”, Ortiz said after América was defeated 3-1 in the second leg of the semifinal against Guadalajara's Chivas.

In the first leg, the 'Águilas' won 1-0. However, Chivas advanced to the final after winning the aggregate 3-2. In the match played at the Estadio Azteca, América dominated a part of the first half but did not harm the rival who opened the scoring with a goal from Ronaldo Cisneros.

In the second half, América's 'Águilas' equalized the score with a shot by Chilean Diego Valdés. Later, Alan Mozo scored Chivas' 2-1. But the game got out of control when the home team ended up with 10 players due to the expulsion of Spaniard Álvaro Fidalgo in the second half.

After the final whistle, Fernando Ortiz appeared with a stern face in the press conference room and announced that he would not answer questions. In the same vein, the coach asked the press to listen to the message in which he announced his resignation and concluded with congratulations to Guadalajara.

“Congratulations to Chivas. We must acknowledge that they played better and I congratulate them on reaching the final of the tournament,” said the coach before leaving in a hurry. The elimination in the Clausura 2023 semifinals is the third consecutive one in this phase that Ortiz has suffered since assuming the coaching position of América a year ago.

The first one was in the Clausura 2022 tournament at the hands of Pachuca. In the Apertura tournament of that year, on the other hand, he was eliminated by Toluca. Fernando Ortiz qualified his team for the final phase in the three tournaments he coached, but in none of them did he manage to bring them into the final to win the 14th league title.
