After several days without statements, Cruz Azul and the Liga MX finally, on January 10th, have announced their position regarding the controversial party with a narcos theme that the footballer, Julio César 'Cata' Domínguez, organized for his son. In the joint statement released by both institutions, they express their disapproval of the events and state that the club has taken corrective measures with the player. In addition, they will provide training and awareness on this issue.
To keep in mind, last Saturday, the Cruz Azul defender posted photos on his social media of his son's birthday party, where elements related to or representing Mexican drug cartels were present.
The images show several children with toy firearms and wearing caps with allusions to Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán. In addition, the caps had the initials JGL, the mentioned narco's initials, who was extradited to the United States in 2017.
After the spread of the photographs, the incident was heavily criticized, prompting the player to make a statement and offer apologies to the public opinion, where he stated that his actions "do not contribute to creating a better impression of Mexico."
What will happen with Julio César 'Cata' Domínguez?
For its part, the Liga MX and Cruz Azul expressed their position after several days, stating that the club has already sanctioned the player, without specifying if there will be further penalties. Additionally, they mention that 'Cata' will record and publish a video offering apologies.
"Both institutions reject any manifestation that promotes violence. The Cruz Azul football club, from the first day, took preventive and corrective measures to resolve this situation and prevent it from happening again," the statement begins.
"In addition, the club will provide support, training, and awareness to the player regarding this delicate issue. It was agreed that player Julio César Domínguez will give a message to the public opinion today to state his position and version of events," it adds.
Drug cartels are the most violent criminal groups in Mexico, whose power remains despite the arrests of several of their main leaders. It is estimated that their networks extend to dozens of countries, according to the organization Insight Crime.
