MONTERREY -- French forward André-Pierre Gignac received the Golden Ball from Mikel Arriola, President of Liga MX, for his performance with Tigres in the 2021-22 season.

Prior to the start of the first-leg match of the 2022 Apertura Tournament between Tigres and Pachuca, which took place at the Universitario Stadium, the executive presented the award to the European attacker.

"Gignac was the top scorer and we're here to present it to him in the pre-match protocol. We have to recognize such a great player, one of the best who has come to Mexican football. We couldn't give it to him in Los Angeles from that season he had, but we're here to present it," said Arriola upon his arrival in Monterrey.

The awards were handed out in the United States a few months ago, but Gignac was not present as he did not travel to that North American country because he is not vaccinated against Covid-19 due to a matter of beliefs.

Mikel Arriola praised the performance that Gignac has had since joining Tigres, with whom he has already become the top scorer in the club's history.

The President of Liga MX agreed with Tigres coach Miguel Herrera that the Frenchman is already at the level of Evanivaldo Castro 'Cabinho'.

"I saw Cabinho as a child and I agree (with Miguel Herrera). He is a great idol, a magnet and besides goals, he has a football comparable to what has come to Mexico as far as I can remember. The Piojo is definitely right," added Arriola.
