It's official. Andres Lillini, former Argentine coach of Pumas, announced his departure from the Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico team this Tuesday, after he and his coaching staff were unable to meet the club's objectives set at the beginning of the season.
The Club Universidad Nacional announces the end of the working relationship, by mutual agreement, with coach Andres Lillini as the head coach of the Pumas first team. We recognize his professionalism and dedication. We wish him the best of luck in his future projects, reads part of Pumas' statement.
Despite being contenders for the Apertura 2022 title, Pumas finished in 16th place with only 14 points. Furthermore, Lillini's former team recorded a poor record of 2 wins, 8 draws, and 7 losses, making them the second team with the fewest wins in the championship.
In light of this situation, the management made the difficult decision to not continue with the services of the Argentine coach, who is leaving Pumas after several years, As it will be recalled, Lillini joined the club in Apertura 2020 as a replacement for Miguel Gonzalez, leading the 'Felinos' to the final of that tournament.
Due to his good work, the team gave Lillini the confidence to continue as the coach of the 'Universitarios', with whom he achieved great results such as reaching the final of the Concacaf Champions League, where they unfortunately lost to the Seattle Sounders. However, the performance was not as desired.
In the face of the Apertura 2022 tournament, Pumas opted for a change and invested in high-level players to compete for the Mexican title. This is how Gustavo del Prete, Eduardo Salvio, and Dani Alves arrived, although the results surprised many, as the team could only defeat Necaxa and Queretaro.
What will happen to Lillini now?
Confirmed his departure from Pumas, the Argentine coach is free to join any team that wants him from now on. According to the latest information, Atlas would be one of the clubs interested in hiring Lillini, although options such as Robert Dante Siboldi, Nicolas Larcamon, and Jorge Francisco Almiron are also being considered.
