Both Canelo Álvarez and Gennady Golovkin have had top-level preparation to meet the circumstances. This Saturday will not be an ordinary day for either of them, and they made that clear when they went through their private weigh-ins: the Mexican registered 167.4 pounds and the Kazakhstani weighed in at 167.8.
Canelo Álvarez arrives with a quite bittersweet present: although he consolidated himself as the first Latin American to achieve all four titles (WBA, WBC, IBF, and WBO) in a category after technically knocking out American Caleb Plant in 11 rounds last November, he suffered a resounding points defeat after moving up a weight class and fighting Russian Dmitry Bivol in May, in his attempt to win the WBA light-heavyweight title.
As for Gennady Golovkin, he arrives with a hunger for revenge following his last disputed defeat against the Mexican. Despite his 40 years, the Kazakhstani returned to the ring after a break between December 2020 and April of this year, to unify the WBA, IBF, and WBO middleweight titles, knocking out Japanese Ryota Murata.
