Nicolás Navarro remembers that Acevedo and González followed Furch's example when they played as forwards in Santos' training sessions
MEXICO -- Nicolás Navarro asked Carlos Acevedo and Julio González to "think like the enemy," that's why they participated in all the scrimmages as forwards and paid special attention to Julio Furch's header finishing, their former teammate at Santos Laguna. Both, in the same matchday, scored the goal that gave their teams the draw: "incredible," says their former coach.
"I made them think like the enemy and they had Julio Furch, a great example," recalls Nicolás Navarro, former goalkeeper coach of Carlos Acevedo and Julio González in the Warriors' squad. "Yes, he was a good example as a header finisher and they trained together, we were very interested in having the goalkeepers on the field," explains the former Necaxa player.
First, Carlos Acevedo celebrated, in a match between Santos and Gallos, then it was Julio González, who scored a goal against Toluca and Pumas. Both goalkeepers, trained at Santos, ran towards the opposing area to score a header goal in the last minute.
"They have it clear, they are goalkeepers, born to be goalkeepers and have great qualities. Whenever we were losing, Carlitos would quickly raise his hand, wanting to go score. Sometimes we let him, sometimes not, on several occasions he was successful. Now that bravery has paid off, he has a goal," narrates Nicolás Navarro.
In the scrimmages, Julio González and Carlos Acevedo "always asked" to play as forwards, so that, even in training, they could think like the enemy and "score many goals." They put that exercise into practice in a Liga MX match and, for a few seconds, they stopped being goalkeepers to celebrate as scorers.
"It's impressive what they do, with the decision to go score. Always, before or after training sessions, we used to play tennis ball and it was clear that Carlos had the same reach with his head as he did with his hands. Julio was a very good header finisher. They always attacked in the scrimmages. It's a new stage in their lives, as scorers," stated Navarro.
