It's official. Coach Raúl Gutiérrez, who led the Mexican national team to the U-17 World Cup title in 2011, has accepted the challenge of coaching Cruz Azul in the midst of a crisis of results, following their 7-0 defeat by América.
The worst defeat suffered by the 'Máquina' occurred during the tenth round of the Mexican Apertura tournament, where they currently occupy the penultimate position. After eleven years, Gutiérrez will receive his first opportunity at the helm of a top club in the Mexican First Division. Previously, he coached Real España in Honduras.
But, who is Raúl Gutiérrez? Known as 'Potro', the Mexican was the coach of the Cruz Azul U-20 team, a position he assumed in July. As Mexico's coach, the 55-year-old manager led the 'Tri' in the 2016 Rio Olympics, but his greatest achievement in his career was the U-17 World Cup title.
That championship won by 'Potro' was the second conquest by the Mexicans in this category. Before that, the 'Tri' won the same championship in the edition held in Peru in 2005. For these reasons, the Cruz Azul management considered Gutiérrez to take charge of the club on an interim basis.
Cruz Azul fans confront players
Cruz Azul's disappointing performance in the tournament led fans to confront several players on Monday. One of the players who received the most complaints was forward Uriel Antuna, who has failed to show the level he had when he arrived at the 'Máquina' and has even made mistakes that cost the team points.
The fans, of course, do not forgive him for these things, and as a result, they threw eggs at Antuna's car and stuck stickers on it. Additionally, huge banners were displayed, where fans directly threatened 'Cata' Domínguez and 'Rafa' Baca: "They stained the history, there is no forgiveness".
When will Gutiérrez debut at Cruz Azul?
Raúl Gutiérrez will have his first test as coach of Cruz Azul this Saturday, when the 'Máquina' hosts another team in crisis, the 'Gallos Blancos' of Querétaro, in a match valid for the eleventh round of the Mexican Apertura tournament. The match is scheduled for 5:00 PM at the Estadio Azteca.
