It is now a reality. Ajax announced on Wednesday the signing of Mexican defender Jorge Sánchez for four years, who joins the Dutch team from América. The 24-year-old player made his professional debut in 2016 with Santos Laguna and two years later joined the 'Águilas', where he shined on his own and caught the attention of Europe.
"Ajax has reached an agreement with América for the transfer of Jorge Eduardo Sánchez Ramos. The right-back has signed a four-year contract, until June 30, 2026," the club reported in a brief statement. Days earlier, the 'Águilas' had already confirmed the departure of the Mexican full-back.
At Ajax, Sánchez will be coached by Dutchman Alfred Schreuder and will have Mexican defender Edson Álvarez as a teammate. Both players have been regularly called up to their national team and are expected to be in the final squad for the World Cup to be held in Qatar.
"Welcome to the biggest club in the Netherlands and one of the biggest football schools in the world, I am very happy for your arrival because I know how much you have fought and what you have gone through to be here. This is a new beginning where you will find an incredible country, culture, and fan base," said Álvarez.
Jorge Sánchez emerged from the basic forces of Santos Laguna, the team in which he made his debut and where he stayed until 2018. He signed with the 'Águilas' in the Apertura of that year and established himself as a starter, a situation that opened the door for him to be a regular in the Mexican national team with the goal of playing in the World Cup.
Blessed by 'Tata'
Before joining his new team, Jorge Sánchez stated that the national coach of Mexico, the Argentine Gerardo Martino, assured him that he was ready to go to Europe, where he will play for Ajax in the Dutch Eredivisie.
"I spoke with 'Tata' Martino, I had told him that my dream was to go to Europe, he told me that this was a great opportunity because I was already a consolidated player, that I was ready and well prepared to go to European soccer," he acknowledged.
Sánchez went to the facilities of América's 'Águilas' to say goodbye to his teammates. The player trusted that changing teams would not affect his goal of playing in the World Cup because he has a lot of communication with Martino.
