América from Mexico defeated Los Ángeles FC from the United States 6-5 on penalties, on Wednesday in an exhibition match of the Leagues Cup-2022 played at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles in front of 71,189 spectators.
The American team launched an attack in the 18th minute with a fast and vertical play by Ghanaian Kwadwo Opoku, who entered the box and took a shot that was saved by América goalkeeper Oscar Jiménez.
The Mexican Eagles responded in the 22nd minute with a front shot by Román Martínez inside the box that was going towards the goal, but was blocked by Colombian defender Eddie Segura.
John McCarthy, the goalkeeper for Los Ángeles FC, showed his skills in the 55th minute when he made a one-handed save on a scissor kick by Román Martínez. As the scoreless draw prevailed until the end, the winner was decided on penalty kicks.
América was the first team to take a penalty. Paraguayan Bruno Valdez, Henry Martín, Karel Campos, Uruguayan players Jonathan Rodríguez and Sebastián Cáceres, and Emilio Lara all scored; only Alejandro Zendejas missed (saved).
For LAFC, Mexican Carlos Vela, Cal Jennings, Spanish Ilie Sánchez, Welsh Gareth Bale, and Argentine Franco Escobar all scored; Ecuadorians Diego Palacios (saved) and José Cifuentes (missed) missed their penalties. Earlier at the same stadium, Los Angeles Galaxy from MLS defeated Chivas from Liga MX 2-0.
