The probable central defensive partnership of the Mexican National Team in Qatar 2022 will be César Montes and Johan Vásquez, two players who were formed in Cimarrones de Sonora and later succeeded in the First Division. The team from the northern part of the country has stood out as a breeding ground for Liga MX teams and is now trying to consolidate its project with a final in the Liga de Expansión MX.

Cimarrones de Sonora is a club that has been founded less than a decade ago, but it already boasts players such as César Montes from Monterrey, Johan Vásquez from Genoa in Italy, and Luis Romo from Rayados, in addition to other players like Salvador Reyes from América, Ricardo Chávez from Atlético de San Luis, Jesús Alcántar from Necaxa, and Alan Montes, all of them currently playing in the First Division teams.

"They had a Cimmerian past. A short stay for César, a slightly longer process for Johan Vásquez, and Luis Romo was here for six months," recognized Pedro Beltrán, sports director of Cimarrones, in an interview from 2021.

The project of the Sonora team sails alongside the idea with which the Liga de Expansión MX was formed: "to develop young players and then place them in the First Division." From that project, facing Atlético Morelia in the final, the most recognized player is Johan Vásquez, who now plays in the Italian League.

Vásquez became the most expensive transfer from a team in the now-defunct Liga de Ascenso MX to the Liga MX, and later he was transferred to Pumas and currently plays in Genoa, Italy. His move to Europe still yielded dividends for the Expansión MX team.

Also on the list is César Montes from Monterrey, who played in the third division of the Cimarron team, and his steps were followed by his brother Alan, who played with the Liga de Expansión team, and later was transferred to Necaxa and now plays for Rayados.

Add to the list Luis Romo, who spent six months with the current finalist of the Liga de Expansión, and Salvador Reyes, who in 2019 passed through Cimarrones, and later joined Puebla and is now with América.

Ricardo Chávez, who has started in 15 matches with Atlético San Luis, also spent a year with Cimarrones de Sonora between 2017 and 2018. The last one is Jesús Alcántar, who attracted the attention of European teams last winter, despite still being a youth player, and he remains with Necaxa.
