With an added-time goal by Ecuadorian Ángel Mena, León came very close to taking the victory against Guadalajara on Wednesday night, in the first leg of the Guardianes 2020 (Apertura-2020) tournament of Liga MX, which ended with a 1-1 draw that gives hope to the green team to reach their second final in less than two years in Mexican football.
This tie will be completed on Saturday at the Nou Camp stadium, where Guadalajara needs to win or draw from the 2-2 result to advance to the final.
It was the 38th minute when León scored the 1-0 for La Fiera. Costa Rican Joel Campbell entered the area from the right side with the ball and played it to the center, where Fernando Navarro finished with a low shot close to the left post.
Chivas leveled the score with a penalty awarded for a foul by goalkeeper Rodolfo Cota on Uriel Antuna. José Juan Macías executed the penalty and scored the 1-1 with a shot to the left of the goalkeeper, who dived to the opposite side.
La Fiera avoided Chivas' second goal in the 85th minute thanks to Colombian Stiven Barreiro, who lunged to clear a shot from Miguel Ponce almost on the goal line.
In the 90+1th minute, goalkeeper Raúl Gudiño saved Chivas from the defeat by stopping a close-range shot from Ecuadorian international Mena, who has scored nine goals in the season (seven in the regular phase).
Gudiño had trouble controlling the ball and had to make a second save with a swipe of his hand.
The other semifinal will kick off on Thursday at the Azteca stadium, between Cruz Azul and Pumas, and will conclude on Sunday at the Olímpico Universitario stadium.
