During his tenure, he made controversial decisions that were criticized, one of them being not calling up Hugo Sánchez, who was the biggest figure in Mexican football at that time.
In an interview with ESPN, as reported by laopinion.com, Menotti said: "Hugo Sánchez was not available at that time, he was playing elsewhere. I needed to strengthen Mexican players and Hugo was already an international figure. It wasn't just Sánchez, there were good players in Mexico."(D)
