MEXICO -- With a year and a half wearing the América jersey, forward Giovani dos Santos was self-critical in acknowledging that he has not lived up to the expectations that the Azulcrema fans have placed on him.

"The expectations towards me are high and I am in a big club like América, where the best is expected from a player. I know I have a lot more to give to this club. It hasn't been an easy year for me with all the injuries that have interrupted my rhythm," he declared.

Along the same line, he pointed out that "I know my ability and what I can offer to the club, and with the support of the coaching staff and teammates, things will be better for me during the rest of my time at the club."

Gio mentioned that the past year has been a time for reflection for him, as he used to worry more and not seek solutions to his problems. "It has been a complicated year in that sense. Every time I found my best version, things happened that were beyond my control, such as injuries, and that has held me back. I haven't stopped working and I was coming off games and feeling physically at my best, and then this happens. One must find solutions, and that's what I have learned in this stage, and I have a great coaching staff and physical trainers," he declared.

With the possibility of the Liga MX resuming and hoping that the pandemic caused by Coronavirus passes, the footballer stated, "We hope that on my return, the injuries will allow me to find my best version and everything that is beyond my control will permit it."

Regarding the possibility of playing the Clausura 2020 behind closed doors, the Olympic gold medalist expressed that it would be a good option, just like playing double matchdays.

"Every player likes to play with fans, but given what is happening, the health of the people is the main priority and we need to adapt. In the club we are in, whether there is a crowd or not, we must play with the same intensity and passion to achieve results," he commented.

"We are accustomed to double matchdays. It is something that América is accustomed to, and we play in two or three tournaments, so it should not affect us. We have a very wide and quality squad, and with that, we will be perfect for double matchdays," he said in a press conference held by the Coapa institution.
