The 'Campeones Cup' and other tournaments in Mexican soccer

With the new alliance between MLS and Liga MX to carry out the 'Campeones Cup', as well as considering a tournament between the best teams from both leagues, we show you some other tournaments that have been played or are currently being played between teams from Mexican soccer, which have not had or do not have great relevance.

INTERLEAGUE

The Interleague tournament took place between 2004 and 2010, which was played with the aim of granting two spots to Mexican clubs for the Copa Libertadores.

However, this competition was born after the culmination between the Mexican Football Federation and the Venezuelan Football Federation, given that the teams from both countries faced each other to determine these places for the tournament organized by Conmebol.

The Interleague was played within the first two weeks of January, which was inconvenient for the eight clubs that played it, since in several occasions the dates overlapped with the 1st and 2nd rounds of the Clausura tournaments.

Perhaps, the most remembered match of the Interleague was the Final of the tournament played in January 2008, when Cruz Azul and América finished 3-3, defining the title in penalties, which was won by América in that instance.

SUPER COPA MX

In 2013, it was proposed to play a single match to determine the Champion of Champions of the Copa MX, facing the winners of the tournaments from the previous football year.

The first match was between Monarcas, champions of the Apertura 2013, and Tigres, champions of the Apertura 2014. The winners of this match were Monarcas, who won their right to play in the Copa Libertadores 2015.

However, after the Mexican clubs withdrew from the Conmebol tournament, the interest was sentenced to pure statistics, as the incentive disappeared.

CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS

It could be said that this is the match or the tournament with the most tradition among the three mentioned, as it has been played since 1941, although at times it has not been disputed for a long period of time.

After nine years of suspension, it returned in 2015 to be played in a single match, leaving aside the home-and-away match played at the respective Champions' stadiums, although in other occasions it was also played in a single encounter.

With the new format, this match is now played in the United States, as a neutral venue. The match does not offer anything more than a statistical championship.
