Football Players in Politics
Looking ahead to the elections in July, some football players have decided to change the playing field and enter politics, either through a political party or as independent candidates.
Here is a rundown of the athletes who now want to succeed in politics.
Cuauhtémoc Blanco
The former player of América and the Mexican national team is running for governor of Morelos with the coalition "Juntos Haremos Historia" (Together We Will Make History), formed by Morena, PT, and Encuentro Social.
Blanco's political debut was in 2015, when he won the mayoralty of Cuernavaca.
Carlos Adrián Morales
The current player of Lobos BUAP is part of the independent candidates for councilors in Michoacán, led by Alfonso Martínez Alcázar, the current mayor of Morelia.
Pablo Larios
The former goalkeeper of Cruz Azul and the Mexican national team will seek the mayoralty of Zacatepec, Morelos, after registering as a pre-candidate for Movimiento Ciudadano (Citizens' Movement).
Adolfo Ríos
The former football player was chosen by the coalition "Juntos Haremos Historia" to compete for the mayoralty of Querétaro.
The appointment of the former América goalkeeper was thanks to a survey, where Ríos was the highest rated by the city's residents.
Manuel Negrete
After the approval of candidates for the 11 mayoral offices in Mexico City by the PRD, the former player of Pumas and World Cup player in Mexico 86, Negrete was nominated for the mayoralty of Coyoacán.
