Enrique Bonilla, President of Liga MX, speaks out after meeting with second division league presidents

In a press conference following the meeting with presidents of the second division league, Enrique Bonilla mentioned that there was an "exaggerated reaction" regarding the proposal to eliminate promotion and relegation in Mexican soccer for four years.

The executive explained that the abolition of promotion was only a suggestion; however, a working document was leaked, which was only a "contribution of ideas".

"There was an exaggerated reaction to the leak of a working document. What is established in the statutes is that only the Mexican Football Assembly has the power to cancel or reactivate promotion and relegation," clarified Bonilla.

On the other hand, the President of Liga MX stated that this idea is aimed at growing Mexican soccer and having teams from other categories such as Ascenso MX and Second Division become institutions that can provide fans with a good spectacle.

"It's not about closing off or seeking a new format. What we're looking for is to improve the structures, for clubs to become institutions in every sense of the word, to grow and help improve Mexican soccer," he added.

Following this meeting, the Ascenso MX presidents "agreed to jointly analyze the results of the compilation and work that is being done".

Furthermore, Bonilla Barrutia mentioned that there will be a new meeting with the Owners' Assembly, which will take place on Thursday, March 1, where topics such as the cancellation of promotion and relegation for four years will be discussed, among others.
