Rangers' Carlos Pena reflects on 'nightmare' spell in Mexico
The midfielder is hoping to rebuild his career after leaving his troubled past behind
Carlos Pena was announced as the new reinforcement for Cruz Azul for the Clausura 2018, a player who was once a promising talent in Mexican football; however, off-the-field issues overshadowed his quality as a player.
'Gullit' Pena, who already has experience in Mexican football having played for teams like Pachuca, Leon, and Chivas, went from being a potential star to a forgotten figure; during his time at La Fiera, the club where he shone the most, he was called up to the Mexican national team, but after leaving that club, his performance never reached the same level.
The midfielder began his career at Pachuca, where he had limited playing time, which led to his loan move to Leon, where he became a two-time champion.
During his first spell at La Fiera, the midfielder was criticized for going out partying after being thrashed by Monterrey in the Apertura 2015; this marked the beginning of rumors about his off-field indiscipline.
Later on, after impressing with Leon, he was sought by Chivas, joining the team in the Clausura 2016 and becoming one of the most expensive signings of that tournament.
His reputation as a partygoer grew during his time at Chivas, which was not well-received by the club, and he was separated from the first team after showing up to a training session in Verde Valle in an inappropriate state.
In addition, Carlos Pena faced criticism just days before his debut with Guadalajara, as photos of him and Edwin Hernandez at a nightclub in Cancun were leaked.
For the Apertura 2016, the midfielder was not in the plans of coach Matias Almeyda, and was loaned to Leon with an option to buy.
Once again, the player was involved in a car accident, which resulted in him being taken to a police station.
His troubled history tarnished his reputation in Mexican football, combined with his declining performance on the field. Chivas sold the player to Rangers in Scotland, where he played limited minutes and, although he managed to score some goals, he failed to establish himself.
Now with La Maquina, can 'Gullit' rediscover his form?
