Meet the great columnists and sports personalities who have somehow contributed to La Afición becoming a leader in sports journalism for 87 years.

SPORTS COLUMNISTS OF LA AFICIÓN

Every day, for the past 87 years, in La Afición, we have been committed to bringing you the most timely information in the world of sports.

Since the legendary Fray Nano founded this newspaper in 1930, until the edition of December 25, 2017, great sports personalities and distinguished journalists have contributed so that you can know different points of view every day, which you may or may not agree with, but that invite you to debate.

Here is a brief profile of the contributors that different generations have read in our pages and, with the passing of the years, also on our website.

FRAY NANO

Alejandro Aguilar Reyes, better known as 'Fray Nano', was a pioneer of baseball and considered the father of the Mexican Baseball League.

Driven by the desire to write and express his knowledge and experience as a journalist, Fray Nano created La Afición, the world's first sports newspaper.

His chronicles and column 'Comentarios de Fray Nano y Picadillo' became legendary in our pages, and are stored in our archives as the most valuable treasure of the person who laid the first stone of this, our newsroom.

MONOSABIO

Since the beginning of La Afición, which also became a specialist in the art of bullfighting, we have had the collaboration of the renowned journalist Carlos Quiroz 'Monosabio', who since 1903 had his own bull publication called 'Ratas y Mamarrachos'.

In this newspaper, 'Monosabio' shared his wisdom and elegance in narrating bullfighting chronicles, and his columns were eagerly awaited by lovers of this specialty.

DON FACUNDO

Fray Nano trusted Monosabio and Manuel Fernández 'Don Facundo' to take the first steps in La Afición.

'Don Facundo' had a lot of experience, and among other sports, his columns and soccer chronicles stood out.

JORGE ALARCÓN RUBIO

Encouraged by his father, Don Benjamín Alarcón (who was also a contributor to La Afición), Jorge Alarcón Rubio, better known as 'Sonny' Alarcón, served as our columnist from 1947 to 1960.

'Sonny' contributed his talent and quality, which would later make him one of the most popular sports journalists in Mexico; he passed away in 2001 due to a heart attack.

ÁNGEL FERNÁNDEZ

Fernández Rugama, whose death paralyzed Mexican soccer in May 2006, was another great writer that our readers could enjoy in our pages while he was a contributor to this newspaper.

Ángel created great nicknames for Mexican soccer such as: 'El Gato' Marín, 'La Cobra' Muñante, 'El Kalimán' Guzmán, or 'El Niño de Oro' Hugo Sánchez.

"To all those who love and enjoy soccer," that will be the phrase that the legendary soccer commentator Ángel Fernández will always be remembered for.

RAFAEL OCAMPO

With his always provocative point of view, his column 'A balón parado' is always one of the most popular among our online followers and newspaper readers.

Rafael has great experience with the Mexican national team, following the Tricolor in several editions of the World Cup, as well as Mexican soccer finals and other international events.

'Rafa' has also been a frequent guest on analysis programs, where he adds a spicy touch to his statements in the debate forums.

GERARDO VELÁZQUEZ DE LEÓN

'Friend and rival' of Rafael Ocampo, Gerardo Velázquez de León contributed his sports knowledge to this newspaper with his column 'El fondo del Meollo'.

The director of TVC Deportes does not hold back when it comes to giving his point of view, which is often criticized or applauded. The truth is that he does not hesitate to attack what he considers unjust.

Gerardo also has extensive experience in soccer commentary in different leagues around the world, as his voice has brought excitement to matches in the Mexican, Dutch, German, Spanish leagues, among others.

MIGUEL HERRERA

Many still remember the famous columns of the current coach of Club América in our pages.

'Las Pulgas del Piojo' were opinions from the strategist, where he shared his experiences from the bench and the occasional point of view about the current state of Mexican soccer.

Miguel Herrera and 'his fleas' were in La Afición for two years.

DAVID FAITELSON

In an odious comparison with América, David Faitelson is that journalist that everyone 'loves and hates'.

For just over two years, the ESPN commentator and analyst stopped writing 'El Color de Faitelson' on our website and print edition.

Always attentive to the hottest topics in a wide range of knowledge in various sports areas, the journalist has international recognition, especially in Central America, where he has been involved in controversy for his harsh comments towards teams such as Honduras or El Salvador.

JOSÉ RAMÓN FERNÁNDEZ GUTIÉRREZ DE QUEVEDO

'Joserrita' has earned a higher title than just being the son of the renowned journalist José Ramón Fernández.

With his column 'Cartas Oceánicas', he delights us with his extensive and exquisite vocabulary, where he tells us about the best of international soccer and those sports topics that rarely get attention in Mexico. Great secrets revealed from the other side of the Atlantic.

At La Afición, we have the luxury of continuing to count on his collaboration as he has now begun a new stage as a executive in the León team in the Liga MX.
