Interim Coaches in Mexican Soccer

After only obtaining one out of the fifteen points available during his five games in charge of Pumas, Sergio Egea was dismissed as the manager of the Universidad Nacional team.

The reins will be taken by David Patiño, a coach who has spent the majority of his career in the lower divisions of the auriazules, but has also served as a perfect interim coach for the team, although he has only managed one official match.

Many coaches, like Patiño, have built their careers through interim positions, a condition that has sometimes benefited them a lot or characterized their good performance based on this.

Juan Antonio Luna

One of the coaches who has forged part of his career through interim positions is Juan Antonio Luna, who has had this opportunity with teams like America and Veracruz.

In America, he is remembered for the participation he had in the Clausura 2008, not for what he did in the league tournament, but for what he achieved in the Copa Libertadores of that year, with the 'Maracanazo' inflicted on Flamengo.

Recently, in the Clausura 2017, he took over from Carlos Reinoso at Veracruz. On this occasion, his leadership culminated in the team's salvation. Previously, in the Apertura 2016, he took charge of the team during a match after the dismissal of Pablo Marini.

Roberto Hernández

A coach who is also an expert in interim positions is Roberto Hernández, with Monarcas, on four occasions. The first was in 2013, when he took over the team from Rubén Omar Romano. After a few games, he was replaced by Carlos Bustos.

Later, in the Clausura 2014, he became interim coach again, but only for one match, which he won against Pumas by 3-1. The third occasion was in the Clausura 2015, when he took over in place of Ángel David Comizzo and in the Apertura 2016 he replaced Enrique Meza.

Roberto Rodríguez

Perhaps the most emblematic coach in this matter of interim positions is Roberto Rodríguez with America in the 80s. During this decade, when the team won five titles, 'Monito' was an assistant coach under the leadership of Carlos Reinoso, Vicente Cayetano Rodríguez, Miguel Ángel López and Jorge Vieira. Rodríguez coached America in 16 matches between 1987 and 1991, winning 10 of them.

Joaquín Moreno

These situations have also occurred at Cruz Azul. In September 2015, after the dismissal of Sergio Bueno, Joaquín Moreno coached the team in one match before the arrival of Tomás Boy. Later, at the end of the Apertura 2016,

Robert Dante Siboldi

The former Uruguayan goalkeeper made his coaching debut in the Final of the 2008-2009 Concachampions with Cruz Azul, following the dismissal of Benjamín Galindo after the team finished last in the Clausura 2009. Siboldi lost the Final against Los Potros.

It was not until the Apertura 2015 that he received another opportunity as a coach, when Santos decided to part ways with Pedro Caixinha, where he led the team in two matches. Currently, due to another dismissal, he has an opportunity as a coach.

Rubén Ayala

'Ratón' took over Pachuca in 2001, after Javier Aguirre's departure to the national team, although his tenure was not very remarkable. He also managed the team in 2003 and 2005.
