This weekend four First Division duels would be played in two of the cities most damaged by last Tuesday's earthquake: Mexico City and Puebla. In the first one, the national classic between America and Chivas was going to take place at Estadio Azteca on Saturday at 9:00 pm. On Sunday at 12:00, the clash between Pumas and León was scheduled. Meanwhile, in the second one, Puebla would face Monterrey on Friday (7:00 pm) at Estadio Cuauhtémoc, and Lobos BUAP would play against Tijuana on Saturday (5:00 pm) at Universitario.
It is worth noting that, after the initial revisions, several of these buildings do not suffer damages that could prevent the matches from taking place, according to the directives of the respective teams mentioned to La Afición.
The camoteros, led by Carlos López Domínguez, conducted the respective inspection along with civil protection elements, and determined that "the stadium is in perfect condition to continue operating regularly. A thorough inspection was carried out to rule out any mishap."
Meanwhile, the Azul stadium is also in good condition after being inspected. The administration staff mentioned that the colossus of Colonia Nochebuena is in good condition.
"The Azul stadium has no problem. We checked it yesterday morning, we were given the report and it's fine. We have a match on Tuesday and from what we have been told, there will be no movement for that date (Cruz Azul vs Pachuca)."
In addition, it was added that "based on the information we have been coordinating with the stadiums, none of them have problems. They have all been verified. In the case of Estadio Azteca, it was said to have a crack, but that is not a crack, it is part of the flexibility that the stadium must have."
Meanwhile, in the case of Pumas, at first sight, the stadium would not have suffered any damage. However, Rodrigo Ares de Parga, president of the felinos, mentioned that "the engineering faculty is reviewing it, the official report will be available in the following hours or days."
On the other hand, Eduardo Henaine, member of the BUAP Board of Trustees, reported that "we are inspecting all buildings, including the stadium, apparently it did not suffer any damage, but since there is no match this weekend, we will have the opportunity to do a thorough inspection."
This is how the soccer venues of the First Division would have no problem hosting any duel, and the postponement of the matches is due more to solidarity with what happened than to any major failure the facilities had after the earthquake.
