Crisis of Pumas stalled by heavy rain and electrical storm alert in Mexico City

The finishing power that has been lacking for the auriazul team was present in the weather, which began to complicate the conditions of the last group stage game at the University City (CU) from six in the evening on Thursday. The opponent was Celaya, from Ascenso MX.

Despite the inclement weather, fans of Pumas were gathering at the Olympic Stadium. As has happened every time a midweek game is scheduled, most fans arrived after finishing their workday, eager to see their team play at home and hoping for a good result.

Everything seemed to be going smoothly. Rain had been consistent in recent days in this part of the city. It was only as the match approached, after 7:00 PM, that the state of the field, with certain puddling, began to draw attention from the press, which speculated about the possible suspension of the game. The stands looked partially empty.

Outside the stadium, security personnel from different squads remained stoic, but even the street vendors were scarce. It was 8:10 PM when it was announced that both teams were warming up in the locker rooms, while workers at the Olympic Stadium tried to remove the standing water on the field. Half an hour before 9 PM, Pumas released their lineup on social media. It was still uncertain how things would proceed.

But less than 10 minutes after the team's tweet with their lineup, the announcement of the game's suspension came over the stadium's loudspeakers, postponing it to Saturday at noon. By then, the stands were almost empty. Civil Protection officers would later confirm the suspension and began evacuating the remaining people. It was a cold night in the south of the capital.

Very little came out of both teams. Some of their players barely came out to assess the state of the field. However, the postponement gives Pumas, who are currently on a downward trend, more time to reaffirm their concepts and try for a victory to end the crisis at the Pedregal.

Located in Group 2, the felines urgently need a favorable result, as the trend in the Cup has not been much different from that in the League. So far, in the first mentioned tournament, they have two draws, five points behind the leader Monterrey, whom they will have to face in a couple of weeks in the Sultana del Norte. Even a draw would give them minimal hopes of advancing to the next round if they fail to defeat Celaya, depending on the results of other teams.
