Ricardo La Volpe will no longer be the coach of Club América.

'El Bigotón' let go of the last ticket to the playoffs after losing 2-3 against Pachuca's Tuzos at the Estadio Azteca, which ended their participation in the Clausura 2017 in a bitter way, after an uncertain start and a promising knot.

This defeat and departure add to the setbacks that the Argentine strategist has suffered throughout his career, although very extensive, very criticized for having only one club level title with Atlante in 1993, not counting the 2003 Gold Cup and the 2004 Concacaf pre-Olympic.

The descent of Atlante

La Volpe contributed when the Potros de Hierro were relegated to the second division of Mexican football. In his leadership (Apertura 2012), the Argentine could do little to reverse the team's irregular results, finishing in 14th position in the general table. It was at the beginning of the Clausura 2013, the tournament in which the team lost their category, when he left the team for health reasons.

The bad experience of Chivas and the case of the podiatrist

'El Bigotón's' time at Chivas was marked by controversy and tepid results. In his first period with the team (1989-1990), La Volpe lasted only half a season due to the team's poor performance. However, it was in the second period (2014-15) when problems arose.

The Argentine accepted the coaching vacancy on April 1, 2014, but on April 29 of that same month, Jorge Vergara, owner of the team, announced in a press conference that the coach was dismissed due to "inappropriate behavior" with staff members.

Hours later, it was revealed that Belén Coronado, Chivas' podiatrist, filed a lawsuit against La Volpe for sexual harassment, alleging that the coach entered her office to make intimate proposals and even physically assaulted her.

The legal process continued in both instances, but it was finally at the beginning of 2015 when the 63-year-old Argentine withdrew the accusation against Chivas, so the team officially released him to continue exercising in another institution.

In the Apertura 2015, 'El Bigotón' arrived in Chiapas and quickly imposed his discipline and style of play on his players, qualifying them for the playoffs in fourth place in the general table with 29 points (eight wins, five draws, and four losses). However, they were eliminated early by Tigres de la UANL (1-3 aggregate), who eventually became the champions of the tournament.

The following season took a 360-degree turn. After qualifying for the 'Fiesta Grande' of Mexican football the previous semester, Jaguares finished the Clausura 2016 at the bottom of the general table, with only 12 points, resulting from three wins, the same number of draws, and 11 losses. These results were carried over to the Clausura 2017 when the club, with Sergio Bueno at the helm, was relegated.
