Pumas accumulate 17 goals against in 10 matchdays in the tournament, positioning themselves as one of the most scored against teams in the Clausura 2017, below León who holds the first position with 19 goals. Josecarlos Van Rankin, defender of the university squad, is well aware of this figure that undoubtedly has worried the team in general in the final stretch of the tournament.
"We know that we can no longer concede so many goals, we are the most scored against team and we know we have to stop that, of course we are working to correct that," mentioned Van Rankin at the end of the team's training session.
Francisco Palencia's team started the Clausura 2017 well. In the first six matchdays they accumulated six goals. Starting from Matchday 7, they suffered a defensive debacle, where they conceded 11 goals in the remaining four matches. Van Rankin, as a defender, takes responsibility for that bad streak so far, and saw this past weekend's FIFA break as beneficial to make corrections.
"There has been a lack of consistency since we started very well and then we didn't have good matches. These are errors that occur in different matches, they are not always the same, we always watch the videos to improve anything that happens in the matches and this break helped us to generalize those errors and improve them," he said.
The twelfth week's match against Chiapas will be crucial to continue in the fight for qualification and to avoid problems at the end of the tournament. The visit to Chiapas territory will not be easy for the university team. In the last five matches at the Víctor Manuel Reyna stadium, the university team has two victories, one draw, and two defeats. Van Rankin is confident that they will be able to achieve a positive result based on the work done during the week.
"It will be a difficult match. We go with a very positive mindset to achieve a good result there. Pumas are already thinking about something else, with a positive mindset to finish the tournament very well," concluded the player wearing jersey number 2.
