According to local press, the police went to the concentration of the Italian national team this afternoon to notify the investigation to both players
Sandro Tonali and Nicolo Zaniolo, international midfielders for the Italian national team, left the team's concentration at the Coverciano Center on Thursday, following the notification that they are being investigated by the Prosecutor's Office of Turin, according to the Italian Federation, which does not specify the cause, which, according to the local press, is due to alleged bets on illegal platforms.
"The Federation announces that, late in the afternoon on Thursday, the Prosecutor's Office of Turin has notified acts of investigation to the players Sandro Tonali and Nicolò Zaniolo, who are gathered with the national team at the Federal Technical Center of Coverciano," the said organization explained in a statement on its official website.
"Regardless of the nature of the facts, believing that in this situation, the two players are not in the necessary conditions to face the commitments scheduled in the coming days, the Federation has decided, also to protect them, to allow their return to their respective clubs," it continued.
According to the local press, the police went to the concentration of the Italian national team this afternoon to notify the investigation to both players.
Both Tonali, a player for Newcastle, and Zaniolo, a player for Aston Villa, are absent from the Italian national team for the qualifying matches for the Euro 2024 against Malta, this Saturday, and England, next Tuesday.
A day earlier, on Wednesday, it was also revealed that the Prosecutor's Office of Turin is investigating Nicolo Fagiolo, a midfielder for Juventus, within the bets on illegal platforms.
The Sporting Code of the Italian Football Federation (FIGC), in its article 24, states the prohibition "for the subjects of the federative regime, directors, partners, and partner carriers of club cards belonging to the professional sector to make or accept bets, directly or indirectly, even from authorized people to receive them, regarding the results of official matches organized within the framework of the FIGC, FIFA and UEFA."
Bets can result in a three-year ban and a financial fine of at least 25,000 euros.
