Gabriel Batistuta
The Argentinean Gabriel Batistuta, former player of Boca Juniors, Inter Milan or Rome, among others, could be the next mayor of Florence if he could run in the municipal elections of 2024.
The former player, who played for Fiore for nine seasons, from 1991 to 2000, was one of the greatest figures of the most powerful Serie A in history, scoring up to 243 goals among the three Italian teams he defended. Now, 24 years after leaving the viola shirt, his name is being mentioned as the next mayor of the city.
And according to the newspaper 'La Nazione', the center-right coalition of the capital of the Tuscany region is considering the legendary forward for the most important position in the city council.
The contacts with Batigol, according to the mentioned newspaper, began at the beginning of July.
The only problem at the moment is the citizenship of the Argentinean, who does not have Italian nationality, so for now, he could not present himself.
There are precedents in Italy
If this issue is resolved, the possibility of seeing Batistuta as the next mayor of the city where he made a name for himself among the greatest forwards in the world and became an idol in the 'boot country' gains strength.
In Italy, it is not new for a player to run for mayor. In fact, Damiano Tommasi, former player of Hellas Verona, Roma or Levante, is the current mayor of Verona.
