About Maracana Stadium

On August 21, 2016, Maracana Stadium hosted the closing ceremony of the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games. Just five months after that event, the state of the stadium's facilities is deplorable. Broken seats, neglected turf, loose cables, abandoned exteriors, holes in the roof... it is a vivid image of abandonment. Hoses, televisions, fire extinguishers have been stolen...

The History of Maracana Stadium

Maracana Stadium has always been one of the stadiums with the richest history in the world of football. It is the largest stadium in Brazil and for a long time, it was also the largest in the world. It hosted the finals of the 1950 and 2014 World Cups. For the 2014 World Cup, Maracana underwent a major renovation that required a significant amount of money. The same happened in 2016 for it to host various events of the Rio Olympic Games. The icon of the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Olympic Games is now in ruins.

Current Situation

Currently, the situation of Maracana Stadium is not the best. Flamengo and Fluminense play their Brazilian league matches there, although due to numerous robberies and the neglect by the Rio City Council, they are considering changing their venue. The Rio Football Federation has issued a statement explaining the constant looting happening in Maracana and is asking Maracanã S.A. to take responsibility for the problems caused. However, the company remains silent on this matter.
