Alemania Extends Joachim Löw's Contract Until Euro 2020

Germany's national team coach, Joachim Löw (56 years old), the reigning world champion, has extended his contract for two years until Euro 2020, the German Football Federation (DFB) announced on Monday.

Löw's contract was set to expire after the 2018 World Cup in Russia, where he will attempt to defend the title won in Brazil. The coach took charge of the Mannschaft after the 2006 World Cup played at 'home'.

'We want to confirm in Russia the triumph of Brazil. I am glad to continue improving the team and the players, to take them to the highest level. That motivates me as much as the titles,' explained 'Jogi' Löw during a press conference in Frankfurt.

If Löw remains in his position until the end of the new contract, he will have spent 14 years in charge of the Mannschaft, the same as Helmut Schon, coach between 1964 and 1978 and world champion in 1974.

The record for the longest-serving German coach is held by Sepp Herberger, who was in charge for 28 years (1936-1964), and also led Germany to a World Cup victory in 1954, against Hungary, in what became known as the 'Miracle of Bern'.

Löw joined the national team as Jürgen Klinsmann's assistant in the autumn of 2004, following the failure at the 2004 European Championship in Portugal (elimination in the group stage). The coach has always placed Germany among the top four in every major tournament: semi-finalist in the 2006 and 2010 World Cups, and the 2012 and 2016 European Championships, finalist in the 2008 European Championship, and victory in the 2014 World Cup.

His playing philosophy is based on fast-paced, short-passing football, with emphasis on possession. A style that, as Low himself confessed, was inspired by the Spanish national team.
