For the first time in its 122-year history, Leicester City is competing in the group stage of the UEFA Champions League, and they do so as the reigning champions of the Premier League. The starting eleven sent to the field by Italian manager Claudio Ranieri was as follows.
Lineup. In goal was Danish goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel. The defenders are Lucas Hernandez, Robert Huth, Wes Morgan, and Christian Fuchs. The midfielders leading the English attack are Riyad Mahrez, Danny Drinkwater, Marc Albrighton, and Daniel Amartey; leaving Islam Slimani and Jamie Vardy as the forwards.
Priceless. Leicester won their first league title last season. In the transfer market, they lost N'Golo Kanté, who signed with Chelsea. But they managed to keep their top scorer James Vardy and made their most expensive signing in history: paying £30 million to Sporting Lisbon for Algerian striker Islam Slimani (28 years old).
Opening the scoring. The English midfielder Marc Albrighton was responsible for scoring the first goal for Leicester City in the UEFA Champions League, in the 5th minute of the match against Belgian side Club Brugge.
