Sports Mole previews Thursday's Europa League clash between Fenerbahce and Union SG, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Looking to respond following a disappointing domestic defeat last time out, Fenerbahce will commence their Europa League campaign with the visit of Union SG on Thursday night.

The Yellow Canaries lost a league battle with Galatasaray over the weekend, whilst Les Unionistes played out a goalless draw with Standard Liege in Belgium.

Taking charge of the club in June following his departure from Roma in January, Jose Mourinho was targeting a run in the Champions League with Fenerbahce this season, but a two-legged defeat to Lille in the qualifying rounds means that Thursday's hosts have been forced to settle for Europa League action.

Apart from that hiccup on the continental stage in August, the Yellow Canaries have enjoyed a steady start to the 2024-25 campaign, sitting second in the Turkish Super Lig standings, five points behind league leaders Galatasaray, who are yet to drop any points after six matches.

It was Okan Buruk's troops who handed Fenerbahce their maiden domestic defeat of the term on Saturday night, when goals from former Arsenal man Lucas Torreira, Belgium legend Dries Mertens and ex-Norwich City playmaker Gabriel Sara fired the visitors to a 3-1 victory.

Before the weekend's defeat to the champions, the Yellow Canaries had enjoyed a three-match winning streak in the Super Lig, scoring 10 goals across the trio of matches against Rizespor, Alanyaspor and Kasimpasa, all without goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic being breached at the other end.

Fenerbahce were one of the big fish in the Europa Conference League last season, with the Turkish giants beating Union SG in the round of 16 to set up a quarter-final clash against Olympiacos, who managed to advance into the final four courtesy of penalty-shootout success.

Finishing second behind champions Club Brugge in the 2023-24 Belgian Pro League, Union SG booked their spot in the qualifying rounds of the Champions League, but as was the case with Thursday's hosts Fenerbahce, the visitors dropped out of UEFA's top tier of club football after a 4-1 aggregate defeat to Slavia Prague.

Since their Europa League-sentencing defeat to the Czech powerhouses on August 13, Les Unionistes have only lost one of their five Pro League fixtures, although they are currently winless in four contests, with three of those matches ending in goalless draws against St Truiden, Anderlecht and most recently Standard Liege.

As a result of their timidness in front of net, it is not a surprise to see that two-goal forward and summer arrival Mohammed Fuseini leads the early Golden Boot race for Union SG, with the 22-year-old possessing Europa League experience courtesy of his time at Austrian side Sturm Graz, who are now competing in the revamped Champions League.

After eight games of the Pro League campaign, Les Unionistes are languishing down in 12th place in the 16-team division, just a single point above St Truiden who occupy the highest of the relegation playoff spots, a fate currently unthinkable for Sebastien Pocognoli's men.

Although their most recent league title arrived all the way back in 1935, Union SG have nurtured a winning culture in cup competitions recently ahead of this season's Europa League quest, with Thursday's visitors winning both the Belgian Cup and Belgian Super Cup in 2024.

Team News

Fenerbahce remain without the services of former Queens Park Rangers attacker Bright Osayi-Samuel, with the 26-year-old expected to be back next month from a foot injury.

Netting a second-half consolation from 12 yards out against Galatasaray, Edin Dzeko should retain his spot at the focal point of the Yellow Canaries' attack.

The Turkish hosts possess plenty of European knowhow in their ranks, with the likes of Sofyan Amrabat and Youssef En-Nesyri pushing for places in the XI after starting on the bench on Saturday.

Receiving his marching orders during the loss to Slavia Prague in August, Union SG's leading marksman Fuseini is suspended for this match.

Les Unionistes are also unable to call upon the talents of Henok Teklab, who is targeting a return to football in the New Year after breaking his leg.

Fenerbahce possible starting lineup:
Livakovic; Muldur, Djiku, Soyuncu, Oosterwolde; Fred, Amrabat; Tadic, Szymanski, Saint-Maximin; Dzeko

Union SG possible starting lineup:
Moris; Burgess, Machida, Leysen; Castro-Montes, Sadiki, Vanhoutte, Rasmussen, Terho; Ivanovic, Akinpelu

We say: Fenerbahce 2-0 Union SG

Apart from Saturday's clash with Galatasaray, Fenerbahce have been formidable so far in 2024-25 and should be confident of breezing past Union SG on home soil.

Les Unionistes are struggling domestically and cannot rely on the talents of Fuseini in attack on Thursday, meaning that we are expecting a difficult night for the Belgians in Istanbul.
