Thomas Müller has become one of the most charismatic German footballers in recent years. A standout scorer for Bayern Munich, he is without a doubt one of the key players in the recent successes of both the Bavarian club and the team led by Joachim Löw.
However, the statistics of the forward in international tournaments hide a curious record that has continued during the Euro 2016, from which Germany was eliminated last Thursday at the hands of host country France.
The German forward has played with the 'Die Mannschaft' shirt in two World Cups (South Africa 2010 and Brazil 2014) and two European Championships (Poland and Ukraine 2012 and France 2016), in which he has scored 10 goals, all of them in the World Cups.
He was key with his goals to take Germany to the semifinals six years ago and also to become champion two years ago in the Maracanã against Argentina. Five goals in each edition also puts him as one of the top scorers in the history of the competition and, if he repeats in Russia 2018, he will reach the mark of his compatriot Miroslav Klose achieved in Brazil.
It is even more curious that he has zero goals in the European tournament, where on both occasions the German team reached the semifinals and fell just short of glory. However, given his youth (26 years old), it seems likely that Müller will compete in one or even two more editions of the Euro in which he can overcome his particular curse.
