Manchester City announced the signing of German footballer Ilkay Gündogan, who left Borussia Dortmund to sign a four-year contract with the English team.

"I am thrilled to have signed for City," said the 25-year-old midfielder in a statement from the citizens. "When I heard about City's interest, my heart already wanted to come here and things moved quickly after that."

The Premier League team did not disclose the amount paid for the player to Dortmund. According to media reports, the transfer fee was £20 million ($29 million).

Gündogan is the first major signing for City under Spanish coach Josep Guardiola, who will start his adventure in English football next season.

Gündogan is currently recovering from a knee injury he suffered in early May, which prevented him from being called up to Germany's squad for the Euro 2020, which starts on June 10.

City finished fourth in the last Premier League and will have to play a playoff to access the Champions League.
