Marcelo Bielsa has reached an agreement with the Uruguayan national team and only the legal details are missing for El Loco to assume the role of technical director of La Celeste. This was announced in the oriental country and the former coach of La Roja will take charge of the Uruguayan national team.
In conversation with Paulo Flores and RedGol, former Chilean national team defender Waldo Ponce expressed his joy at having El Loco back in South America.
"I believe that, more than being good or bad for the Chilean national team, it is very good for Uruguay. Will they know what is good? Yes. He is a great coach who will help Uruguay a lot," said Ponce.
He adds, "Before taking on any job, the professor is a studious man and he makes decisions for a reason. Clearly, he must know all the players and those coming up. It is a great opportunity for him to once again demonstrate what he is like as a coach."
Finally, the former defender of La Roja referred to the clash between Bielsa and Eduardo Berizzo. The first match of the qualifying rounds for the 2026 World Cup in Mexico, the United States, and Canada will pit the Uruguay of El Loco against the Chile of El Toto.
"It will be interesting, although they have different styles in my opinion, but obviously El Toto learned a lot from coach Marcelo," concludes Waldo Ponce.
