Danny Welbeck to miss Euro 2016 after knee surgery
Arsenal striker Danny Welbeck, who was injured on Sunday against Manchester City, underwent surgery on his right knee and will be out for nine months, meaning he will not participate in the Euro 2016, the London club announced on Wednesday.
"Specialists determined that surgery was necessary after exams revealed severe damage to the cartilage," Arsenal explained in a statement. "Danny will miss Euro 2016 and his complete recovery will take around nine months," they added.
His absence is a heavy blow for England, although the Arsenal striker had already lost his chances of being a starter in favor of Wayne Rooney, Harry Kane or Jamie Vardy.
Danny Welbeck had only returned to the pitch in February after being out for 10 months with a left knee injury. Welbeck was expected to be one of the five forwards selected by England coach Roy Hodgson for the Euro 2016.
Welbeck, who last played for England on 27 March 2015 against Lithuania, has scored 14 goals in 34 matches for his country.
